This guide is designed for county offices of education interested in hosting the professional learning program focused on implementing equity-minded computer science (CS). This includes a week-long, multi-stakeholder professional learning experience in the summer followed by quarterly workshops during the academic year. Additional quarterly community of practice meetings encourage community building and engagement.
The and San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, in conjunction with the coalition, initiated and directs the Seasons of CS. The intent of this site is not to suggest that the Summer of CS should be replicated; rather, it is intended to inspire iterations that focus on meeting the needs of a specific region.
The Seasons of CS model expands upon the research-based professional learning pilot program. Summer of CS was inspired by the CSPDWeeks hosted by the Colorado School of Mines, which included workshops offered by Exploring Computer Science (ECS), MobileCSP, and Bootstrap, as well as Code.org’s TeacherCon. Recognizing its roots in CSPDWeek, the Summer of CS program was designed for regional implementation and to include multiple stakeholders. Learn more about the expansion from pilot to statewide model and watch the videos below to hear more about the Summer of CS pilot program.
We would like to thank the participants and facilitators of previous Summer of CS experiences who brought so much energy and engagement, as well as sharing their ideas for how to improve the model.
This material is also based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant #1837780, as well as generous funding from the California Community College Chancellor’s Office. We would like to thank the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) for generous support to help make the Summer of CS possible through a Chapter Grant for the CSTA Sacramento Chapter. Additional partners, including Code.org, Exploring Computer Science (ECS), National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT), Palo Alto Networks, Google CS First, and LEGO for Education were critical to the success of the program.
The Educator Workforce Investment Grant (EWIG) California Department of Education in Computer Science was awarded to UCLA and its CSforCA coalition, along with CDE Foundation and Sacramento County Office of Education to implement Seasons of CS professional learning program across California’s Statewide System of Support.
